WebOS Open Source Roadmap
Posted by gavomatic57 in Hardware, Linux on January 25, 2012
Good news WebOS fans! After announcing that they were going to open source their WebOS operating system, many wondered (including myself) how HP was going to do it and on what timescale. Well, it seems that the answer is out there now for all to see.
WebOS to be Open Sourced!
Posted by gavomatic57 in Hardware, Linux, News on December 9, 2011
Good news everyone! After much deliberation and procrastination, HP has decided that the best course of action for its promising but ultimately unsuccessful tablet OS is to open it up to Open Sorcerers the world over. It’s not a straightforward process and because WebOS has some proprietary components, it’ll take some time to fill in [...]
HP Offers £130 Touchpads to WebOS Developers
Posted by gavomatic57 in Hardware, Linux on November 7, 2011
HP has made yet another attempt at thoroughly confusing it’s customers, developers and onlookers. For a short time only, registered WebOS developers can get their hands on a shiny new 32GB HP Touchpad for just £130. There are only two reasons I can think of why HP would want to do this. It could be [...]
WebOS 3.0.4 Released
Posted by gavomatic57 in Hardware, Linux on October 18, 2011
When HP dropped the bombshell a few months ago that WebOS devices were getting the chop just a month after launching the often praised but seldom bought Touchpad, few would have expected HP to keep releasing updates for it. When HP announced that it would be clearing all remaining stock with a firesale, the message [...]

HP has just dropped a bombshell and announced that they are going to discontinue the Touchpad and its range of phones running WebOS. In a press release it has said:

When I tried a HP Touchpad at a well-known retail store it was running WebOS 3.0.0. It impressed me in the way that it laid everything out, how the browser behaved and how the tiles let you manage your applications with the minimum of fuss. Unfortunately, the one thing I didn’t like was the speed at which it loaded applications – or lack thereof. Loading the mail application or the calendar took forever and it really took the shine off the experience.
Welsh developer Yamgo creates live TV app for HP’s Touchpad
Posted by gavomatic57 in Linux, News on July 26, 2011
Good news for WebOS fans and evidence that the Welsh tech industry is alive & kicking, Swansea-based Yamgo now has a TV app for the HP Touchpad in the pipeline. Yamgo already provides live TV streaming for other devices such as the iPhone, but it’s encouraging to see developers taking on HP’s new tablet. If [...]
WebOS – Linux Action Show
Posted by gavomatic57 in Linux on July 5, 2011
I’ve talked about WebOS before, but the Jupiter Broadcasting guys have been playing about with the preview platform that you can download from here. They’re incredibly excited about WebOS and couldn’t find a bad word to say about it. The WebOS part of the video kicks in at around 36:30, so you may or may not want to skip forward if you are pushed for time.
WebOS in action

WebOS could well be another success story for Linux. It combines a Linux kernel and other open source components together with a sprinkling of proprietary software mixed in. Since HP acquired Palm, they’ve announced their grand plans for it, with tablets to compete with the iPad and the Android tablets coming onto the market. They’ve also suggested that they may find a home for it on their desktop PC’s.
