Android Fragmentation

The words “Open” and “Source” when used together can be a double edged sword. On the one hand it offers developers access to the guts of the program and the ability to make changes if they think it will improve the software in some way. Unfortunately it also offers those with a vested interest an opportunity to manipulate the software to their own ends.

“The UK is a closed source stronghold” – a few thoughts

There was an interesting article in the Register today. It talked about how the UK has one of the most proprietary computing environments in the world and cites examples of places around the globe that does things differently. In India the regional Government for Kerala is using Ubuntu and as I’ve talked about previously, the French police force is also migrating to Ubuntu. The article’s focus is Steve George, the vice president of business development at Canonical, plus there’s a big article in the middle of the page from Canonical themselves, so it will be a little bias.
