Ubuntu’s New HUD

So, this is this new HUD we’ve been hearing about. It appears to take the idea of Spotlight on the OSX and the search bar on Windows a step further to include menu options as well. It’s an interesting idea but I’m guessing that typing every command rather than mousing over to them is going [...]

Onlive – Play on Ubuntu using Wine

I think it is fair to say that Onlive has the potential to almost level the playing field for gaming on the desktop, giving Linux and Mac users a share of the PC gaming market. Unfortunately, as I type this there is no official linux client for Onlive. However, there is some encouraging news at this early stage, with details of a job advert for someone to port the Onlive client to linux here.

Kubuntu 11.04

I received a comment on this post which said:

Any comments on the alternative desktops? Kubuntu 11.04, Xubuntu 11.04 etc… I’m not keen on this Unity stuff. (Up until now I’ve been running 10.04 on my old Dell, but I’ve recently got a ThinkPad and put Ubuntu 11.04 on it.)

Google Chrome for Linux

Google Chrome whimpered onto the scene way back in 2008 in Google’s bid to speed up the internet and extend it’s already large foothold over the modern internet. Feedback was largely positive amongst those who “got it”, but those like myself took a little longer to get used to the stripped-down nature of the Chrome interface, even if the speed was a breath of fresh air compared to the increasingly bogged-down Firefox we were using at the time. Unfortunately Chrome was a Windows-only affair to begin with before later being extended to the 2nd most popular desktop, Mac OSX.

Macworld.co.uk: After MacDefender, Linux looks better than ever

During my lunchtime browse through the internet with my cheese & ham roll and steaming cup of black coffee, I struck upon this curious article on Macworld.co.uk. It’s written by Katherine Noyes (PCWorld.com) who is forever the butt of many of the Apple pundit’s jibes, but it still surprised me that it appeared on Macworld. [...]

Asus to ship Ubuntu netbooks

Potentially some good news here for Linux and Ubuntu fans like myself. Asus are going to start selling its Eee range of netbooks with Ubuntu 10.10 (not wishing to risk Unity presumably), starting with the 1001PXD, 1011PX and 1015PX.

Linux running in your web browser

A clever chap named Fabrice Bellard has created a PC emulator in Javascript. This has allowed him to run the 2.6.20 linux kernel within Chrome 11 and Firefox 4. You can read his technical notes here.

Huawei E585 with Three

I’ve always been quite sceptical about mobile broadband. The biggest problem is the crushing expense of going over your data allowance. Users finding a four-figure phone bill landing on their doormat is not an uncommon occurrence, especially when abroad. Back in 2009 a man received a £22,000 bill for downloading a few films while overseas.

Android Fragmentation

The words “Open” and “Source” when used together can be a double edged sword. On the one hand it offers developers access to the guts of the program and the ability to make changes if they think it will improve the software in some way. Unfortunately it also offers those with a vested interest an opportunity to manipulate the software to their own ends.

Motorola Atrix & other Androidy thoughts

I’m not planning to ditch my iPhone anytime soon – I can’t really, there’s another year to run on my contract. However, whilst watching BBC Click today this Motorola Atrix caught my eye.

Mainstream Linux

Not a year goes by where someone asks “Will [insert year] be the year of the Linux desktop”. Every year the answer seems to be no. There are always going to be barriers to widespread user adoption of linux, whether they be dirty tricks from Microsoft and Apple, the lack of a significant retail presence or even the lack of high-end productivity applications such as Photoshop, it isn’t going to be an easy ride.

KDE 4.6

KDE 4.6 has just been released and as a fairly recent convert to KDE I’m quite excited by this. If you look at the screenshot it’s arguably even more gorgeous than 4.5, but thankfully beauty is more than just skin deep.

Scary times in Linuxland – Novell has been sold…

This week news broke that Novell, the company behind OpenSuse linux has been sold. It’s rarely a good thing when companies are bought up by others as there are often casualties. To make matters worse Novell was sold in two parts – the one part worth $2.2 billion going to Attachmate and another part – this one worth $450 million going to a Microsoft-led consortium.

Gendarmerie Nationale switch to Ubuntu

In what could only be seen as good news for Linux fans, the body responsible for public safety and policing in France has started migrating 85,000 PC’s to Ubuntu and are saving 2m Euros in the process – and that is just license fees. Canonical have posted the case study to their website here.

Parallels 6

I’ve downloaded a trial of Parallels 6 to allow me to test linux distributions without having to boot up the desktop and sit in that cold dark room. I have a native installation of Ubuntu 10.10 and Kubuntu 10.10 on that, but I don’t like to use it unless I really need the grunt.
