Steam Mobile (iOS & Android)
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Utilities on January 27, 2012
PC & Mac gamers with iPhones or Androids will be pleased to hear that there is a Steam app on their respective app stores right now. However, the app is already attracting negative reviews from people who can’t read. You see, the app is in beta and in order to use the app you need [...]
Traveline Cymru – iOS
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Utilities on January 13, 2012
Well, you don’t see a Welsh app for months and then two come along at once. Something else that has a habit of arriving in clusters at irregular intervals is the public bus, which brings me onto our second Welsh app for the week. If you are wondering, this was the first. Traveline Cymru is [...]
The New 500px iPad App
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Photography, Utilities on October 18, 2011
If you don’t know what 500px is, you’d best check out my overview here. In short, it’s a relatively new photo sharing site with an emphasis on quality and building a portfolio to be proud of. As a result the calibre of the images you will find on there are in a different league to those you’ll find on Flickr, at least most of the time anyway.
Anyway, to help iPad users get the best out of 500px there is now a dedicated iPad app. It’s a free app with a clean, simple interface and is really quite beautiful. It makes browsing the cream of the 500px crop a breeze and is equally excellent for showing off your own efforts.
Twitter for iPhone 3.3.3
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Utilities on April 2, 2011
Twitter app users may be pleased to hear that Twitter has removed the much reviled “quick bar”. The quick bar was a box that used to appear at the top of the screen telling you what was trending at that time. Unfortunately, it was so despised by a number of people it even provoked petitions and all sorts.
Jamie’s Recipies – iOS

Jamie Oliver may not be everyone’s favourite person right now. In the last few years he’s been on a Bono-style mission to convert the eating habits of children, who unbeknownst to them are being led to an early grave by their parents. He’s also been opening a chain of Italian restaurants across the country that force you to queue outside regardless of the weather.

In a surprising move, Sony has released an official Playstation app. The app gives you access to your trophies, your friends list, a news feed and a comprehensive list of games on all of the current Playstation consoles.

The Mill Colour

If you don’t feel like paying for an app like Camerabag to give you a few distinctive looks to your iPhone snaps, try the Mill – it’s free and gives you 10 different looks: golden, print, cross-processed, chocolate, noir, instant, 70′s, milky, promo and bleached. The shot above uses “promo”, noir is just monochrome and bleached just washes out the colour, but it’s amusing playing around with it, depending on what you want the end result to be.
Redlaser
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS on April 12, 2010
Right, time to wax lyrical about an app I saw on TV. Redlaser is the ultimate app for those in the process of emptying their wallets. The app turns your iphone camera into a barcode scanner that is amazingly quick and reliable. I use Delicious Library on the Mac, which uses the built-in iSight camera to read barcodes and you can be there for hours trying to get the product at the right angle to read the barcode. This however manages it in no time at all and returns the product name very quickly too.
Met Office iPhone App
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Photography on April 4, 2010
This at first seems like an unlikely thing to feature on a the photography section of my blog, but bare with me.
If, like me, you spend a lot of time shooting outdoors the weather is going to be a big factor and who better to provide up-to-the-minute (well, with caveats) weather information to people in the UK than the MetOffice. Fortunately, they have released an iPhone app and it is free.
The walkthrough video above should show what it does and how it does it, but how does it help you and your photography?
