Aperture 3′s Flickr Integration

Aperture 3 is a brilliant application for managing your photos, I trust it with all of my images, create slideshow videos from it at do 99.9% of my post-processing with it. However, there is one feature that causes much consternation amongst users who don’t understand how it is supposed to work.

195/365 – Parking lot

Another from the 365 that I’m pleased with, but I’m not sure why. It was late evening, the sun was starting to set and these cars were lined up in a dock-side parking area. It received the usual square crop, a few level adjustments and a retro preset to give it that slightly odd colouring.

183/365 – Home-made tilt-shift

Whilst it is tempting to spend money on a plugin to create fake tilt-shift images from Aperture, I couldn’t go ahead with the purchase without at least trying to do it myself.

The Mac App store

Following the incredible success of the iOS app store, Apple has introduced an app store for the Mac too. When the app store was first announced a few months ago, there was a lot of talk about how Apple might be posturing to lock OSX down and have the app store as the sole method of installing apps. Whilst I still think that is a load of scaremongering nonsense, I couldn’t rule out an evolutionary transition to an app store only model.

Aperture 3 speed improvements in 10.6.5

It has been an exciting couple of weeks for Aperture 3 users like me. I had become accustomed to waiting around for Aperture to process things and got used to making allowances for its disappointing performance. However, on the day of the Back to the Mac event where we saw the launch of iLife 11, a couple of updates also became available for Aperture. The 3.1 update had an extensive list of fixes but most noticable was the improved performance.

iPhoto 11 & Aperture 3.1 Slideshows

I must admit, I do enjoy putting together a slideshow. It’s a great way of putting your favourite photos in order and with a musical accompaniment. Now that Youtube has gone HD I can upload a 720p or 1080p movie created from within iPhoto or Aperture and post it to my blog.

An evening on the Pont-y-werin – The obligatory B&W Square crop

Oh alright, one more! You know I like the black & white square crops and this shot was asking for it.

Aperture 3 Presets

I’ve been spending a bit of time trying to find out what plugins are available for Aperture 3 and which ones are worth getting. As it turns out, I may have been missing out on half of the fun. One of the things that the 3rd incarnation of Aperture brought with it was the ability to create and share presets between users.

Workflow

Inspired by a Britstock colleague, I thought I’d spend some time talking about workflow. My workflow is something that has taken quite a while to develop and I have experimented with a fair amount of different software options along the way while I avoided the issue of spending money.

Swan Lake – The Next Generation

It has been a couple of days since I have blogged…but I have been shooting, honest! Here’s a couple of Cygnets who were being ferried around Cosmeston lakes by their parents last weekend.

Aperture 3

Before I’d put any money in Apple’s pockets, way back in the days when I was firmly in the Windows camp (for my sins), I was always told that one of the best things about the Mac is the software. After trying out iWork and the iLife suite I can safely say there is some truth to that. OSX divides opinions, some like the way it works, others don’t, but the Apple applications are quite special.

I like my photography, I’m not the best at it, but it provides me with a lot of enjoyment and I’m building up quite a stack of photo’s. iPhoto has been invaluable up until now. It is handy for making minor adjustments, organising photo’s into sets and sharing with Flickr & Facebook. However, there was always that nagging feeling that I needed more. More organisation tools, more adjustments, better RAW tweaking etc. I have tried Photoshop Elements 8 for the adjustments and organisation (on the PC – the mac version comes with Adobe Bridge, which I don’t get on with), but PSE8 is just an overweight version of the GIMP in my opinion and is a chore to use. The organiser on the Windows version runs like an arthritic dog and the mac version is not as useful to me. So, at £160, Aperture 3 may be worth a shot.

Teide

I’m still going through my honeymoon photo’s, but now I have added an Aperture 3 trial to my arsenal.
Aperture 3 is like iPhoto on steroids and so far I’m really impressed with it.
I need to spend a bit more time fiddling with it, but I’ll work on a review shortly.
