Looking Local – iPhone

When Apple said in their iPhone ads that there is an app for everything, they weren’t joking. With “Looking Local” you can now report potholes from your iOS device.

Cardiff: My cycle network

A local contact named Steve Castle is an avid cyclist, photographer and media guy. He teamed up with a work buddy to create this video for a Sustrans competition. There’s a full rundown of how he did it on his blog here.

White Friday

It’s been quite the winter so far. Whilst nowhere near the “Arctic” weather the mass media likes to talk about, Black Friday soon became White Friday as it snowed for most of the day. We’d received about 7-8 inches of snow by the end of the day and a couple more inches during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Toy Boating Club

I don’t know what it is about winter, but it inspires me to get out and shoot. After a couple of weeks of sub-zero temperatures, ice and snow, the weather offered us a brief respite. We’ve had two days of warmer winds and even some sunshine so my wife and I took a walk around Cosmeston Lakes in Lavernock.

Aberthaw Limeworks

I haven’t posted a photo for a while, so here you go. This is the Aberthaw Limeworks. Opened in 1888 by the Aberthaw Pebble Limestone Company, it remained in operation until 1926.

More Time-lapse – Minsk

Sorry, you’re probably getting bored of these by now, but I have a time-lapse idea brewing in my head and I’m trying to work out the finer details. Needless to say, I’m trying to gather as much inspiration as I can.

Harley & photographing kittens

It’s been a quiet week at Techbeast towers, mainly because I’ve been having some time off work with my wife and we’ve just welcomed our newest member of the family – Harley.

Seeing the World – well, Europe for now…

Bruges train station, originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis. My wife and I are planning a trip. When we were both at that age where the typical “student” decides to go off and do some travelling, we were busy working and never really had the chance. We plan to head to France, maybe with one nights [...]

Pont-y-werin Bridge

Pont-y-werin bridge is a new footbridge (and cycle way) linking Penarth and Cardiff. Previously the only way to walk to and from Penarth to Cardiff was over the barrage (providing it wasn’t closed for the night) or down Penarth road, which is not ideal. Until the bridge opened walkers and cyclists would dice with death on the Cogan Spur, a busy stretch of tarmac with no hard shoulder or pavement.

Flickr “pick of the moment” – Almost Transparent Blue

Here’s a guy worth keeping an eye on if you like street photography. He goes by the name “Almost Transparent Blue” on Flickr and readily produces some wonderful images of the streets where he lives. Hailing from Japan his work has a distinctive look to it, not only from the Japanese signage and fashions but with his use of muted tones.

Sailor Soup

We have a Welsh folk museum here in Cardiff called St Fagans. Over the years historians have been relocating historic and culturally significant buildings to the site brick by brick, as well as their associated fixtures and fittings. It’s quite an interesting place if you are ever visiting Cardiff and entry is currently free, although parking is around £3.

Iced Coffee

It’s funny how you can latch onto some places and find yourself spending a disturbing amount of time there. My wife an I go to a local branch of Costa very regularly. Nothing unusual in that you may think, but this particular branch is in the middle of a car park on the outskirts of town. Still, it’s good coffee…

Early mornings

I managed to get up in time to share my wife’s taxi to the train station. She needed to get the early train to London for a meeting and the buses are useless at that time, so taxi was the only way. Armed with just my phone I made my way across town and up [...]

Puerto de Santiago – Tenerife

Frequently ignored by the package holidaymakers from the UK, Puerto de Santiago offers something different to the overly Anglicised towns further south such as Playa de Las Americas and Los Christianos. It’s ideal for couples who are happy to stroll around, enjoy walks around the coast and embark on excursions operated by the various tour operators on the island.

Teide

I’m still going through my honeymoon photo’s, but now I have added an Aperture 3 trial to my arsenal.
Aperture 3 is like iPhoto on steroids and so far I’m really impressed with it.
I need to spend a bit more time fiddling with it, but I’ll work on a review shortly.

Spaghetti Western

As a bit of a change from my black & white squares, I thought this time I’d try something different.

This is a shot taken in Tenerife from within the Teide National Park. I looked at the scrub, the lonely buildings and the Monument Valley-esque rock formations and instantly thought “The Wild West”. So here I’ve gone for a slightly aged and yellowed out look. In hindsight I wished I’d got closer to the buildings in the distance, but we were on a coach tour and at that altitude I didn’t really feel like running!

Puerto Santiago

I love this place. It’s perfect for me, it’s quiet but well stocked with restaurants and close enough to two neighbouring resorts to not get boring.
