WordPress Users Wales Meetup

Today was the first meeting of a WordPress user group just for us Wales folk. It was held at the new(ish) Atrium building down on Adam street in Cardiff. This is the University of Glamorgan’s creative hub, so it seemed a fitting venue for a WordPress meetup. Turnout was pretty good and whilst I didn’t [...]

The Problem with Travel Company Websites

Forgive me, but this is going to be a bit of a soap-box post, a moan if you will. My wife and I are currently exploring options for our next holiday and thanks to the less-than-stellar state of the major tour operator websites, this isn’t as easy as it should be.

The recession has not made things easy for the tour operators. People are travelling less, airport taxes are making holidaying abroad a little less affordable and the countries we UK types often pick for our short-haul jollies are suffering too. Greece and Spain are both gripped by a major recession and thanks to a lack of holiday-makers, the airlines are having to “re-evaluate” their flight schedules. The consequences of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010 are also being felt among the tour operators. It grounded a lot of flights for long periods and a plane standing still is costing money and earning nothing.

Data Roaming Charges

Back in the olden days when we all carried Nokia’s and the internet was something that made that squawking noise when you started it up, you could take your phone on holiday without too much to worry about. Sure you were getting charged to receive calls and even more to make them, but at least you had some control over how your phone behaved. If you didn’t want to make a call, you didn’t get charged. If someone called you, the option was there to not answer it, or answer and make the caller feel incredibly guilty that this call was costing you money.

The 25 Most Photographed Places on Earth

The folks at Cornell University have compiled a list of the 25 most photographed places on Earth using data mined from Flickr. The list includes some surprising results, namely Portland, Oregon plus some not-so-surprising entries, such as the fantastic CN Tower in Toronto and the Colosseum in Rome. The article then goes on to have a dig at what it considers the “standard shot” and suggests an alternative way of shooting each location.

Small Life in Spain

Ok, last one now (for the time being anyway). I’ve got a soft spot for Spain so I had to blog this one when I found it. Christoph Schaarschmidt has a few of these “Small Life” videos on his Vimeo profile, so you may wish to take a look after you’ve seen this one. This one was shot in Granada, Olvera, Gibraltar, Ronda and Salobrena. I’ve been to Gibraltar and Ronda so it was nice to see these gorgeous places featured.

Dixons

The Register has reported on the ongoing financial woes of the UK’s much bemoaned electronics retailer Dixons. The whole DSG group has been less than healthy for a while, but they seem incapable of finding a way out of it.

The Mountain – a Timelapse on Vimeo

Tenerife is one spectacular place, right from its famous black sandy beaches up to its 3715m peak. You can go from baking sunshine on the coast to a snowy summit within the space of a few miles. As you travel from the coast you’ll experience a variety of different climates, ranging from arid desert, fertile soil and pine forests before emerging into something that wouldn’t look out of place in a Western (movie).

Spain

As I’ve said in the past, you can find some real gems on Vimeo. Here’s a time-lapse from Spain filmed using a home-made dolly and a Nikon D90. I have a soft spot for Spain so this was an instant favourite.

Cardiff’s Official Visitor Guide – iOS

Whether you are a local or just visiting Cardiff, it’s unlikely that you’ll know everything about the place. I’ve lived here for over 30 years and even I need to look things up from time to time.

CADW – iOS

It is nice to see a few Welsh apps appear on the app store. What with the rugby apps and a few tourism ones, it’s not a bad showing. Now CADW, the body responsible for maintaining all of those castles we are famous for has an app too.

34/365 – The Senedd at night

Was quite pleased with this one, although I was chilled to the bone waiting for the exposure to finish. We were experiencing gales in South Wales last night, but Cardiff Bay is windy at the best of times.

Cardiff Arcades Project

Cardiff has seen a lot of retail investment in recent years. We have a couple of large indoor shopping centres, such as the Capitol, St David’s Centre and the new St Davids 2 development. We even have an Apple store now.

White Friday

It’s been quite the winter so far. Whilst nowhere near the “Arctic” weather the mass media likes to talk about, Black Friday soon became White Friday as it snowed for most of the day. We’d received about 7-8 inches of snow by the end of the day and a couple more inches during the early hours of Saturday morning.
