Dreamhost Domain Registrations & 500px
Posted by gavomatic57 in Internet, Photography on January 23, 2012
If you are a 500px “Awesome” customer and wish to make use of their custom domain feature, they helpfully provide instructions for how to map your domain to your 500px account using Godaddy as your domain registrar. Unfortunately for me I’m already a Dreamhost customer and wanted to keep everything under one roof for convenience. [...]
New Portfolio Site
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography on January 23, 2012
Good news everyone! I finally got around to sorting out a proper portfolio site for me. As I mentioned in another post, talking about (oddly enough) portfolio websites, I now have one! Head over to http://www.gavinlewisphoto.com and have a look around. It’s a pretty simple affair, with just a few collections and no social features, but [...]
Making a Portfolio Website
Posted by gavomatic57 in Internet, Photography on January 21, 2012
Here’s a rather lengthy lesson from podcast legend Ted Forbes (@tedforbes). In this episode he talks about the many options for creating your portfolio website, the things you should try to do and the things you should avoid. I must admit I agree with most of what he said, especially when it comes to the use of Flash. As I talked about in a previous post, around 25% of my visitors here are coming from mobile devices, specifically Apple devices which do not have Flash.
iBooks Author for Photobooks
Posted by gavomatic57 in Mac OSX, Photography, Project 365 on January 21, 2012
Apple’s iBooks 2 and iBooks Author announcement may have been aimed at schools and colleges, but it is worth remembering that iBooks Author is exactly that and not just for authoring textbooks. Ever since finishing my 365 project at the end of 2011, I’ve been trying to muster enough motivation to start putting the images [...]
Nikon D4
Posted by gavomatic57 in Gear, Photography on January 6, 2012
The new top of the line Nikon has finally been announced, incorporating a 16.2 megapixel sensor using the new Expeed 3 processing engine, 51 autofocus points and an ISO range that starts at 100 and keeps going right up until 102,400 (expandable to 50-204,800). It’ll also rattle through 11 frames per second in continuous shooting [...]
365:2011 – It’s All Over!
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography, Project 365 on December 31, 2011
365:2011 – All, a set on Flickr. Well, it’s been a very long year so I’m quite glad to bring this project to a close. Shooting when you are not in the mood, feeling under the weather or pushed for time is really quite draining. Shooting when doing so is the last thing you want [...]

Photography On the Internet – It’s all kittens & nudes!
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography, Thoughts on November 26, 2011
The internet is a fantastic place for the aspiring photographer to ply their trade. You have the ability to reach millions of people with very little effort and have an image travel from your camera to your audience within seconds. It is hardly surprising that Flickr uploads are counted in the billions and Facebook isn’t exactly short of a few either.
A Lesser Photographer
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography, Thoughts on November 21, 2011
I must thank my friend Heather for finding this, but I wanted to share it with you too. Anyone who has spent enough time listening to photography podcasts (with the exception of Ted Forbes’ excellent The Art of Photography), reading photography magazines or reading discussion forums will be aware of the constant “gear whoring” that [...]
StuckOnEarth – iPad
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Photography, Software, Utilities on November 17, 2011
Whilst there are some great photos on Flickr, I think it is fair to say that the website has seen better days. It’s awash with Flash-based slide shows, a clunky and ugly interface and it still lacks a native iPad app. This is a shame, because the wealth of geotagged images on Flickr would make [...]
What does it feel like to fly over planet Earth?
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography, Timelapse on November 14, 2011
Well, now you know, although I’d wager that the thought running through your head would be something along the lines of “aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh, I’m in spaaaaace….!”.
The Big 300!
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography, Project 365 on October 29, 2011
300/365 – Chair, originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis. Yesterday was a bit of a landmark day for me. Day 300 had arrived at last, which not only means that there is just 65 days left of this project but there’s less than 65 days until Christmas and I really should figure out what I should [...]
The New 500px iPad App
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Photography, Utilities on October 18, 2011
If you don’t know what 500px is, you’d best check out my overview here. In short, it’s a relatively new photo sharing site with an emphasis on quality and building a portfolio to be proud of. As a result the calibre of the images you will find on there are in a different league to those you’ll find on Flickr, at least most of the time anyway.
Anyway, to help iPad users get the best out of 500px there is now a dedicated iPad app. It’s a free app with a clean, simple interface and is really quite beautiful. It makes browsing the cream of the 500px crop a breeze and is equally excellent for showing off your own efforts.
The Water – Terje Sorgjerd
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography, Places, Timelapse on October 16, 2011
Here’s another excellent sequence from Terje Sorgjerd. Frequent guests will have seen Terje’s work before, with his amazing The Mountain that was shot on the awesome island of Tenerife. This time Terje has been capturing the breathtaking beauty of western Norway.
Cardiff Half Marathon 2011
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography on October 16, 2011
It’s been a while since I’ve filed anything under photography, but I managed to fill a memory card full of images of the half marathon this year. The course came very close to my house, so I couldn’t not shoot it. So, here’s a slideshow…
Wow and Flutter – a video on Vimeo
Posted by gavomatic57 in Movies, Odds & Ends, Photography on September 22, 2011
A friend of mine put this together with her Canon EOS 7D. Shot and edited over two days, edited in iMovie ’11. I used Canon lenses, an EF 35mm f/2 and EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro. Good first effort, it looks very polished and the image quality is good too. Check out her blog here.
Rafael Asquith Time-lapse Showreel 2010
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography, Timelapse on September 20, 2011
It has been a while since I’ve posted a time-lapse video, which is a shame because it just means that I haven’t been looking. Still, I’ve found myself in a contemplative mood this afternoon so a trip to Vimeo seemed like a good idea. Here’s a great sequence that caught my attention not just for the fact that it has a dark, wintery feel to it but because the soundtrack seems like a perfect accompaniment to the video and the whole thing seems to flow very smoothly indeed (no juddery clouds!).
How not to do Street Photography
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography, Thoughts on September 6, 2011
Spotted this on Petapixel and had to share it. Street photography is something that needs to be done with a large dollop of sensitivity and respect for your subject. Whilst people who are out in public are “technically” fair game as far as the law is concerned, it doesn’t change the fact that you are invading someone’s personal space by jumping out at people and pointing your camera at them.
