Ubuntu On Your Android Phone

Here’s an interesting idea from Canonical. They are currently trying to attract Android handset manufacturers who may wish to produce a high-end phone with the ability to dual-boot into a desktop operating system. You may remember the Motorola Atrix from last year. This was an impressive device that had the ability to be docked in [...]

Government Consultation on Open Standards

The UK Government is currently running a consultation on open standards and their place in Government. If you have an interest in open source, open standards and openness generally, I suggest you speak up, or they’ll just jump into bed with Microsoft again and continue with the locked-in status quo. You’ll find the consultation here. [...]

KDE 4.8

You’ve probably seen the Linux Action Show on here before, but I’m sharing one of their episodes again because it concerns KDE 4.8. KDE is one of those desktops that I’ve spent ages trying to like. The most recent versions of KDE 4.x have been achingly gorgeous to look at and extensively customisable, but yet [...]

Linux Action Show

I’m quite an avid viewer of the Linux Action Show from Jupiter Broadcasting. They are usually quite entertaining as well as having a fair few interesting picks that I may have missed when they reached the news feeds. As it has been a fairly interesting time in the Linux world lately, I thought I’d share [...]

Ubuntu’s New HUD

So, this is this new HUD we’ve been hearing about. It appears to take the idea of Spotlight on the OSX and the search bar on Windows a step further to include menu options as well. It’s an interesting idea but I’m guessing that typing every command rather than mousing over to them is going [...]

WebOS Open Source Roadmap

Good news WebOS fans! After announcing that they were going to open source their WebOS operating system, many wondered (including myself) how HP was going to do it and on what timescale. Well, it seems that the answer is out there now for all to see.

Linux Market Share

There was an interesting article on Linux Insider this week. It suggests that market share for the Linux desktop has jumped sharply within the last month or so.

Ubuntu TV

Probably not much of a surprise to Ubuntu fans, but Canonical appears to have ambitions beyond the desktop PC. Finding a place on tablets is clearly an obvious goal, but it appears that the TV set is a target too.

PC-BSD 9 User Guide

It isn’t often that we see comprehensive documents and user guides for open source operating systems.  New users are usually left scrabbling around forums and Googling their way out of problems.  However, if BSD is your poison, you may wish to download the user guide for the latest version of PC-BSD – currently version 9. [...]

WebOS to be Open Sourced!

Good news everyone! After much deliberation and procrastination, HP has decided that the best course of action for its promising but ultimately unsuccessful tablet OS is to open it up to Open Sorcerers the world over. It’s not a straightforward process and because WebOS has some proprietary components, it’ll take some time to fill in [...]

Some thoughts on Android

Amusing post here from Macworld’s Macalope. It could be argued that it is a little petty in places, but it does make a few interesting points about the current (and regrettable) state of Android. But man, AT&T’s notion of Android is a lot different from Google’s. Android as Google ships is it really quite good. [...]

HP Offers £130 Touchpads to WebOS Developers

HP has made yet another attempt at thoroughly confusing it’s customers, developers and onlookers. For a short time only, registered WebOS developers can get their hands on a shiny new 32GB HP Touchpad for just £130. There are only two reasons I can think of why HP would want to do this. It could be [...]

Ubuntu & the Future

Here is Mark Shuttleworth talking at a recent developer summit. He’s clearly a man with a vision and the drive to take it forward. Perhaps this is what Linux has been crying out for for some time. It was quite remarkable to spend some time using Ubuntu 11.10 when you consider where it was only [...]

Ubuntu 11.10

Well, it’s coming to the end of October and that means that a new version of Ubuntu will have landed this month. I’ve installed it, given it a bit of a going over and here’s what’s what.

WebOS 3.0.4 Released

When HP dropped the bombshell a few months ago that WebOS devices were getting the chop just a month after launching the often praised but seldom bought Touchpad, few would have expected HP to keep releasing updates for it. When HP announced that it would be clearing all remaining stock with a firesale, the message [...]

Ubuntu App Developer Centre Opens its Doors

I’ve previously talked about the new Ubuntu Software Centre coming in Ubuntu 11.10 and the submission guidelines that Canonical had made available to developers wishing to publish to the new portal. They’ve now launched a new website here that is designed to take developers through the process, share information and resources.

Kubuntu 11.04

I received a comment on this post which said:

Any comments on the alternative desktops? Kubuntu 11.04, Xubuntu 11.04 etc… I’m not keen on this Unity stuff. (Up until now I’ve been running 10.04 on my old Dell, but I’ve recently got a ThinkPad and put Ubuntu 11.04 on it.)

Ubuntu 11.04 with Gnome 3

To say that the decision to move to Unity in Ubuntu 11.04 was controversial would be the understatement of the year. Unity is a relatively new UI first seen in the Ubuntu Netbook remix, yet it was still quite buggy even up until the release of 11.04. Around the same time, the folks at Gnome had been putting the finishing touches to their major overhaul of the Gnome desktop, yet Gnome 3, despite its flashy new look and interesting features was snubbed by some of the biggest names in the linux desktop business.

Ubuntu 11.10 – The New-look Software Centre

Ubuntu 11.10 is just a month away from its final release. When it arrives, you’ll find a fair few new and interesting changes to the desktop such as refinements to the Unity interface, Thunderbird for your emails instead of Evolution and a revised “alt-tab” switcher. Perhaps the most talked about change in Ubuntu 11.10 is the new Software Centre. Ubuntu has always had the “add/remove programs” window where you could browse the repositories in a friendly and not-at-all geeky manner, but 11.10 takes this to a new level.

Happy Birthday Linux

Celebrate 20 years of Linux with the Linux Action Show! I’m posting this video because as I’m sure you’re aware, I’ve been talking about WebOS a fair amount lately and I’m rather hacked off that HP has killed it. The guys at Jupiter Broadcasting are also rather miffed too, so I thought you might want to see them get their feelings off their chest.
