Kubuntu 11.04

I received a comment on this post which said:

Any comments on the alternative desktops? Kubuntu 11.04, Xubuntu 11.04 etc… I’m not keen on this Unity stuff. (Up until now I’ve been running 10.04 on my old Dell, but I’ve recently got a ThinkPad and put Ubuntu 11.04 on it.)

Kubuntu 11.04

Ubuntu may be stealing all of the limelight with its controversial Unity interface, but Kubuntu has also been released. There’s no controversy here as KDE is all present and correct, shipping with KDE 4.6.2, OwnCloud storage (available from repository), LibreOffice and a Gstreamer backend for multimedia playback.

KDE 4.6

KDE 4.6 has just been released and as a fairly recent convert to KDE I’m quite excited by this. If you look at the screenshot it’s arguably even more gorgeous than 4.5, but thankfully beauty is more than just skin deep.

Oracle

Oh dear oh dear oh dear, what have you done Oracle – and what are you going to do next?

Since aquiring Sun Microsystems for $7.4bn in April 2009, they’ve quickly become the scourge of the open source community. First of all, they fired up their team of lawyers to go after Google over an alleged copyright and patent infringement of its Java technology.

Linux for Professional Photographers

As you know, I like Linux. I also like photography but Linux is often left out in the cold by the pro photographers because their beloved Adobe products are not available. I don’t particularly like Adobe and will not pay their obscene prices so this is a useful tip for me too.

BTRFS is quite an exciting new file system coming to a Linux desktop near you.

alternativeto.net

It’s pretty fair to say I’m not your biggest fan of proprietary software, or even paid-for software. I often find that, as I mentioned in my Photoshop Elements 8 post a lot of paid-for software seems to take up a lot of space and use a lot of RAM for no apparent reason. If you are like me, you may wish to take a look at alternativeto.net

Steam for Linux

I recently blogged about the Mac as a potential gaming platform and I mentioned that whilst it is an exciting proposition, the limited range and power of GPU’s found in the current Mac range may be a stumbling block.
Phoronix recently posted a few articles that made me giddy with excitement. The Mac Steam beta has uncovered a few interesting items of code that suggest that as well as a Steam client for OSX, one for Linux is also on the way. First there is this

Ubuntu 10.04 GRUB problem

Well, my upgrade to the forthcoming Ubuntu 10.04 (currently in Beta) did not go well at all. After running the update manager with the -d flag, it all went swimmingly until a message popped up asking where I wanted to install GRUB. Naturally I chose the drive the rest of it is installed on. The installation carried on and the machine restarted “in order to complete the installation”.

Install Kubuntu KDE from within Ubuntu

Install Kubuntu KDE from within Ubuntu Gnome is the obvious choice for those wanting a rock-stable linux desktop, but KDE4 is a great example of just how good a linux desktop can look. Fortunately you can have both in different sessions. Here’s a quick guide on how you can have your cake and eat it.

RSS feed reader – Liferea

Great little RSS feed reader for you here. I don’t know about you but I’ve so far found the RSS support in Ubuntu a little haphazard. In Windows Vista you can subscribe to a feed and if you have Outlook 2007 installed it’ll appear in there under your inbox, but with Ubuntu you can subscribe [...]

Collection managers

If you’ve ever had the desire to catalogue all of your gear, whether they be DVD’s, games, books or CD’s I can heartily recommend GCstar. The app Ceemedia was suggested in last month’s Linux Format magazine so I tried it, only to find that many users on its Sourceforge page were complaining of error messages [...]

Create your own Live CD (updated with new links 24/4/2010)

I created my own Ubuntu live DVD yesterday, complete with all the apps & codecs I use and the Ubuntu Studio theme I install each and every time I reinstall. I think I’ll call it GavBuntu (haha) If anyone else using Ubuntu or Mint would like to do the same, it’s really easy. Go to “Software [...]

Axel Downloader

If you download a lot of files and are frustrated at the slow speeds you get, you may benefit from a download manager.  Whilst there are many around, few are as lightweight and as handy as Axel.  It runs in the Terminal (command line) and downloads from various sources to speed things up.  If you’re [...]

Lyrics in Amarok

I’ve stumbled upon a great little tool that you can download from within Amarok called “wiki-lyrics”. While you are playing one of your tracks, it’ll search wikipedia for the lyrics and the artist’s info. It’ll also then update the ID3 tag of the track – great for budding bedroom singers. When running it in gnome [...]

KDE

If you are using Ubuntu, you are probably aware of Kubuntu.  Kubuntu is basically Ubuntu but with a different window manager.  Ubuntu uses what they call Gnome and Kubuntu uses KDE. “What you use” is something that causes much debate in linux circles.  Some will only use Gnome, some will only use KDE. To the [...]

Pearls of the Ubuntu Repository

Open up the “Add/Remove programs” section of the Ubuntu Applications menu and you’ll be greeted with a daunting array of programs to download.  Luckily(!) they all have vague descriptions of what they are, but I’ll give you a run down of some of the good ones. ….In Graphics….
