Google App Updated for the iPad
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet, iOS, Utilities on November 22, 2011
If you have the Google app on your iPad but have left it to gather dust, you may want to take another look at it. It has recently had a bit of a makeover to take advantage of the larger screen, not to mention the gesture support. Launching the app takes you straight to a [...]
StuckOnEarth – iPad
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Photography, Software, Utilities on November 17, 2011
Whilst there are some great photos on Flickr, I think it is fair to say that the website has seen better days. It’s awash with Flash-based slide shows, a clunky and ugly interface and it still lacks a native iPad app. This is a shame, because the wealth of geotagged images on Flickr would make [...]
iOS 5.0.1 Released
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Apple, Hardware, iOS, Utilities on November 10, 2011
Good news everyone! iOS 5.0.1 has finally been pushed out and is waiting for download. This is the much awaited update that promises to fix the rather inconvenient battery drain we’ve been seeing since the 5.0 update came out. It also fixes some bugs with “Documents in the cloud” and voice recognition issues with Australian [...]
Zeebox – iPad

It is really no surprise that watching TV these days is often accompanied by a laptop and your favourite social network. A survey conducted by Nielsen found that 42% of Americans who use tablets and 40% of smartphone owners were glued to them while watching TV. 75% of UK TV watchers are also glued to the internet whilst watching TV.
iPad Newsstand: Tap! Magazine
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on October 30, 2011
Following on from my post about the Metro edition for the iPad, another stunning example of how Newsstand could revolutionise the publishing industry can be found in Future Publishing’s iOS magazine, Tap! Tap! was put together on bespoke software designed exactly for this purpose. The folks at Future decided that the software everyone else was [...]

Your browser does not support the video tag If you can see this, it probably works ok…
Bloomberg for iPad
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on October 23, 2011
After two years on an iPhone before finally getting an iPad of my own, I was a little surprised to find that there was no stocks & shares application installed by default. Truth be told, I didn’t notice until iOS5′s notification centre popped up to reveal a whole load of nothing. The iPad has no [...]
iPad Newsstand – Metro
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on October 20, 2011
With the launch of iOS5 and it’s Newsstand feature, we’ve seen a number of traditional publishers attempt to get their customers to download their app from the app store. Newsstand allows users to purchase or subscribe to their favourite magazines and read them from their iOS device. Once subscribed, should a new issue pop out [...]
The New 500px iPad App
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Photography, Utilities on October 18, 2011
If you don’t know what 500px is, you’d best check out my overview here. In short, it’s a relatively new photo sharing site with an emphasis on quality and building a portfolio to be proud of. As a result the calibre of the images you will find on there are in a different league to those you’ll find on Flickr, at least most of the time anyway.
Anyway, to help iPad users get the best out of 500px there is now a dedicated iPad app. It’s a free app with a clean, simple interface and is really quite beautiful. It makes browsing the cream of the 500px crop a breeze and is equally excellent for showing off your own efforts.
Pages for iOS
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on October 15, 2011
I’ve been playing with Pages on the iPad and I think I like what I see! I really love the way Pages on the Mac handles pictures, it simply wipes the floor with MS Word. Pages on the iPad behaves in a similar sort of way but being able to manipulate images with your fingers [...]
Flipboard – iPad
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on October 13, 2011
Flipboard is an RSS aggregator not unlike Paper.li, but where Flipboard excels is in the way it works so seamlessly, turning its expansive directory of RSS feeds into something resembling an issue of National Geographic magazine. Feeds are broken down into categories and sites can be added to your favourites with the tap of a button. If a site isn’t listed you can search for it and add it manually. I’ve added this site to the list and it looks fantastic, truth be told. It exudes quality, making it far more enjoyable to read my own ramblings…
Facebook for iOS 4.0
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on October 11, 2011
Facebook has released perhaps its most significant update to the iOS version of its app. The new version adds support for the iPad’s larger screen and has been redesigned to incorporate a new slide-out navigation pane. It’s an impressive looking thing, make no mistake, but I think it could have stayed in the oven a [...]
Overlook Fing – iPhone & Android
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on August 27, 2011
If you are the sort of person who is always fiddling (like me) and always wants to know everything that is going on with the household electrical equipment, you would probably find it useful to know exactly what is connected to your home network at any given time.
Rugby World Cup 2011 – iPhone & iPad
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on August 27, 2011
Well, the only World Cup that really matters is just days away, so predictably an official iPhone & iPad app has arrived onto the app store. It’s a fairly “off the shelf” affair, but it has a lot of the information you are going to need to keep track of your team when they’re going to be playing most of their matches at 5:00am UK time.
Google+ for iOS finally out!
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet, iOS, Utilities on July 19, 2011
It has been a while since we had the tip-off from a Google employee that the Google+ app had been submitted to the app store for approval, but now it is here!
Best Camera – iOS
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on May 30, 2011
Chase Jarvis has been mentioned on this blog once or twice before, so it is only fair that I take his iPhone app for a spin. It is called Best Camera (based on the saying “the best camera is the one you have with you”) and is accompanied by a paperback book and a website (www.thebestcamera.com) for you to share your creations on. The app costs £1.79, which makes it far more expensive than the Photoshop app and slightly more than Camera+.
Apple Store app reaches the UK
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Apple, iOS, Utilities on May 30, 2011
The official Apple Store app was released in the USA an age ago, but I’ve just noticed that is now available to download over here now too.
Lovefre.sh – iPhone
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on May 26, 2011
Here’s an interesting little app for those who like their food as fresh as possible. Whether you are looking for something organically produced, a “pick your own” or a local farm shop, Lovefre.sh could be right up your street.
Speedtest.net – iOS
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet, iOS, Utilities on May 23, 2011
Often used as a weapon against Internet service providers and their misleading speed claims, Speedtest.net is a one-stop shop for those of us who are curious about the broadband they are paying for. The website also allows you to rate your ISP and share your score with the world.
