Ubuntu On Your Android Phone
Posted by gavomatic57 in Android, Hardware, Linux, Ubuntu on February 21, 2012
Here’s an interesting idea from Canonical. They are currently trying to attract Android handset manufacturers who may wish to produce a high-end phone with the ability to dual-boot into a desktop operating system. You may remember the Motorola Atrix from last year. This was an impressive device that had the ability to be docked in [...]
iTunes Match – Numerous Empty Playlists
Being away actually led me to this first post back after my break. I’m an iTunes Match subscriber and use it with an iPad, iPhone and a Mac. I took the iPad and iPhone away with me, but both were without data for a week or so. Whilst I was bored (believe it or not, I failed to escape the tedium of “Homes under the Hammer” even out in Tenerife) in the apartment I decided to make a couple of playlists using tracks from my entire library, ready for when I returned and could listen to the tracks that were not on the device.
Steam Mobile (iOS & Android)
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Utilities on January 27, 2012
PC & Mac gamers with iPhones or Androids will be pleased to hear that there is a Steam app on their respective app stores right now. However, the app is already attracting negative reviews from people who can’t read. You see, the app is in beta and in order to use the app you need [...]
Console Rumour Mills
Posted by gavomatic57 in Hardware, Playstation 3 on January 26, 2012
The rumour mill is in full swing, gearing up for the possible launch of a new generation of games consoles somewhere down the line. So far the rumours have been sounding like more of a wish list than a rumour, so it’s hard not to have a chuckle at them. For the 360 I’ve so [...]
O2 & Mobile Browsing
Posted by gavomatic57 in Communications, Hardware, Internet on January 25, 2012
O2 customers had a bit of a fright this morning when news of a little flaw in the way the carrier was allowing websites to identify you over 3G started spreading across the internet. When you use the internet with any device, whether it is a phone, tablet, PC, Mac or even a PS3 the [...]
RIM CEO’s step down
Posted by gavomatic57 in Communications, Hardware, News on January 23, 2012
Beleaguered Blackberry maker Research in Motion’s dual CEO’s have finally stepped down. “There comes a time in the growth of every successful company when the founders recognize the need to pass the baton to new leadership,” he said at a press conference at RIM’s headquarters in Waterloo, Canada. Source After seeing market share and their [...]
Apple’s Education Drive
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Mac OSX, Utilities on January 19, 2012
When Apple doesn’t like something, or it senses that there’s a way to do something better you can bet that at some point down the line they will try to do something about it. Today it decided to announce its assault on the humble textbook. The textbook has barely changed at all over the years. [...]
Swansea Sound – iPhone
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Utilities on January 16, 2012
Well I never, here’s yet another Welsh-themed iPhone app. This is a must for anyone who has moved away from Swansea but just can’t live without listening to Swansea Sound on the radio. Yes, this is an internet radio app, tuned to only one station – Swansea Sound, at least initially. As soon as you [...]
Traveline Cymru – iOS
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Utilities on January 13, 2012
Well, you don’t see a Welsh app for months and then two come along at once. Something else that has a habit of arriving in clusters at irregular intervals is the public bus, which brings me onto our second Welsh app for the week. If you are wondering, this was the first. Traveline Cymru is [...]
Enjoy Snowdonia – iPhone
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Utilities on January 12, 2012
It is always good to see Welsh iOS apps turn up on the app store. As a nation we seemed to be quite slow to get our acts together when this whole “app” thing kicked off. So far I’ve only seen a handful of Welsh-themed offerings hit the store, which is such a shame. Enjoy [...]
The New iPad Theme
Posted by gavomatic57 in Internet, iOS, Utilities on January 11, 2012
iPad users rejoice! You can now view Techbeast.net in a more app-like way, complete with pop-out windows and the types of control boxes you will already be familiar with. iPhone & other mobile users will also be treated to a slightly flashier mobile theme, allowing you to browse in relative comfort.

If you’ve just landed on this site using your iPad, you may have noticed the swanky new theme. I’ve got a few images to sort out and a few settings to fix so please bare with me. An improved service will commence when I’ve had some spare time! Thanks!
Ubuntu TV
Posted by gavomatic57 in Hardware, Linux, Ubuntu on January 9, 2012
Probably not much of a surprise to Ubuntu fans, but Canonical appears to have ambitions beyond the desktop PC. Finding a place on tablets is clearly an obvious goal, but it appears that the TV set is a target too.
Running PC Pro on tablets
Posted by gavomatic57 in Android, Apple, Hardware, Internet on January 6, 2012
UK PC magazine PC Pro recently tried to do a days work using nothing but iPads, Galaxy Tab’s and all manner of other tablet devices. They came a little unstuck using the WordPress app for iOS and Android, but it sounds like it was reasonably successful… You can read all about it here. I do [...]

Apple TV Revisited
Posted by gavomatic57 in Apple, Hardware on December 27, 2011
When I blogged about the Apple TV back in September the Apple landscape was a slightly different place. There was no iCloud, there was no iTunes Match and there were no TV programmes available to view on the Apple TV without first downloading them on your PC or Mac and streaming them. Whilst this worked fine, it was not an ideal solution. It was a workaround and a bit of a pain to keep the computer on, subdue the power-saving functions and hope that your programme found its way to your TV.
Merry Christmas from Siri
Posted by gavomatic57 in Apple, iOS on December 23, 2011
Cool advert from Apple with a play on their Siri voice assistant. Apparently it’s the most effective ad of the season. That said, adverts aren’t exactly setting the bar high these days.
iTunes Match
Posted by gavomatic57 in iOS, Mac OSX, Music, Utilities on December 20, 2011
Back in the day (wow, I’m starting to say that a lot…) when we were all managing perfectly fine with dial-up connections, things were simple. The internet consisted of many static HTML web pages covered in text, low resolution images and tables. There would often be a spattering of gaudy background images as well. It [...]
Selling a Used iOS Device
Posted by gavomatic57 in Apple, Hardware on December 20, 2011
As you’ll probably have picked up from the other posts on this blog this week, I have recently changed my phone. Now that I have a perfectly serviceable 3GS sat lying around, it would make sense to try and get some money for it. The mobile operators all offer recycling schemes that suggest the old [...]
iPhone 4S Thoughts
Posted by gavomatic57 in Apple, Hardware, iOS on December 18, 2011
The iPhone 3GS was a bit of a landmark for me. Two years ago I acquired a 16GB 3GS from an O2 shop in the stunning city of Bath. My wife and I were effectively killing time before we could fly out on our honeymoon. We had married a day or two before, spent a [...]
