Google+ Gets a Makeover
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet on April 11, 2012
Barely out of short trousers and Google+ is already getting a major refit. The new look offers a fresh, clean UI with a few features lifted directly from Facebook & Twitter (profile cover photo from Facebook, trending topics from Twitter) not to mention a navigation bar that looks like the one from Instapaper on the [...]

Good news for BT Infinity subscribers, especially those of us on Option 2. PC Pro reports that speeds for option 2 are to be boosted to 76Mbit/s for downloads and 19Mbit/s for uploads. Customers on Option 1 will see upload speeds boosted to 9.5Mbit/s. The best news of all is that this will take effect [...]
Facebook buys Instagram for $1bn
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet on April 9, 2012
It may have been bank holiday in the UK, but it was apparently business as usual on the other side of the Atlantic. For Mark Zuckerberg it seemed like the perfect day to announce that Facebook had acquired Instagram for $1Bn. Understandably, this has raised a number of questions, as these big buyouts always do. [...]
Standards-based Video Chat Coming to Firefox
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet, Linux, UNIX & Open Source on April 9, 2012
We’ve talked about WebRTC before, but now it seems Mozilla is well on its way to incorporating it into Firefox as their demo video shows. The video chat page that is served when the user initiates a video chat uses a custom API intended to simulate the getUserMedia and PeerConnection APIs currently being standardized at [...]
Cloudflare
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet on April 7, 2012
I and every other Dreamhosts customer received an email last night informing us that they had formed a partnership with a web security service called Cloudflare. We would be able to either pick their free option or pay $10 for something more advanced. Cloudflare is a security & caching service that should make this site [...]

Posted by Gavin Lewis in Hardware, Internet on April 5, 2012
Google has unveiled its augmented reality glasses… One question…can I get them in my prescription?! If you’d like to keep track of progress, they have a Google+ page here. Update You’ve got to love the Internet. It hasn’t taken long for the parodies to flood onto YouTube. This is perhaps closer to the reality…
Communications Capabilities Development Programme (CCDP)
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet, News on April 1, 2012
In the coming weeks you may start hearing about the Communications Capabilities Development Programme (CCDP). This is an old plan from the Government which was initially shelves and then – supposedly – resurrected. The idea was initially suggested by Labour but the plan was put on hold when the Coalition took control of the House [...]
Chrome 18 Gets A Graphical Boost
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet on March 29, 2012
Chrome users rejoice! Your favourite browser has been given a significant boost to its graphical repertoire courtesy of GPU-accelerated Canvas2D and WebGL. Canvas2D allows your browser to run various web applications with more fluidity by offloading rendering to the graphics card. WebGL helps to reduce the gap in 3D performance between your browser and a [...]
Firefox & Open Source in China

Interesting post here on Computerworld talking about how Firefox and open source in general has so far failed to gain a foothold in China.
Getting WordPress to Display Shared Links Correctly
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet on March 20, 2012
I’ve had this site running for a couple of years now, but something has been annoying me. Whenever I share a post from this site with one of the social networks (Facebook, Google+…) the URL shows up, a thumnail image (usually the wrong one, mind) and the tagline for the site, not the post.
WordPress SEO – A WordPress Plugin
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet on March 19, 2012
I’m not sure what I did wrong with the Wordpress SEO plugin, but it decided it was going to use a related post’s title as a page title, so my post on Ubuntu 12.04 was given the header “Ubuntu 11.04 and Gnome 3″. Other posts were affected too.
Ruin – A Short by Wes Ball
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet, Movies, Odds & Ends on March 17, 2012
Check out this post-apocalyptic vision crafted by Wes Ball. It reminds me of game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West in the way it portrays a ruined city in an overgrown and tech-filled way. I’m not sure if that was his intention, but the result is a vivid scene blessed by impressive production values.
Camera+ & WordPress for iOS
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet, iOS, Utilities on March 15, 2012
This is a nice touch. You can now add a photo to WordPress using Camera+. In the new version of WordPress for iOS (2.9.6) you can tap the Camera button to either take a photo with Camera+ or add one that you have already taken. Being able to use Camera+ instead of having to take [...]
Facebook Timeline for Pages
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet on March 1, 2012
Finally! Facebook’s new Timeline has made it onto business and brand pages. I’m a big fan of the new Timeline and I’ve been eager to get it onto the Techbeast page as well. The timeline allows you to apply a great big image across the top of the page, which appeals to the show off [...]
The New & Improved 500px
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet, Photography on February 26, 2012
I think it is fair to say that since 500px started to gather momentum among photographers it has been steaming along quite happily, eating up former Flickr users and generally basking in the warm glow of internet love. Like any online service it feels the need to keep moving, keep evolving and after the partnership [...]
More on Roaming Fees
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet, Places on February 26, 2012
I’ve talked at length before about roaming charges before, but having recently been away I’ve had chance to see things from the perspective of a user. First of all, when I last talked about data roaming charges, I said that: There’s a good article here on ZDnet that explains how Orange justifies it. To start [...]
WP Touch Pro 2.6 & Jetpack shortcodes
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet on February 16, 2012
A new version of WPTouch Pro has been released, which fixes a number of bugs, adds iPad ad support and more. Unfortunately, if you’ve arrived here using a mobile device you may have noticed a bit of an issue with embedded video in some of my other posts. I use Jetpack short codes to embed [...]
Retro IT and the rise of IE6
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Internet, Windows on February 1, 2012
I heard some deeply distressing news tonight. A tweet popped up from Ars Technica suggesting that Internet Explorer 6 was growing in market share once again. You can read the distressing report here. It also suggested that Windows XP was also on the rise.
