Google+ Gets a Makeover

Barely out of short trousers and Google+ is already getting a major refit.  The new look offers a fresh, clean UI with a few features lifted directly from Facebook & Twitter (profile cover photo from Facebook, trending topics from Twitter) not to mention a navigation bar that looks like the one from Instapaper on the [...]

Facebook buys Instagram for $1bn

It may have been bank holiday in the UK, but it was apparently business as usual on the other side of the Atlantic.  For Mark Zuckerberg it seemed like the perfect day to announce that Facebook had acquired Instagram for $1Bn.  Understandably, this has raised a number of questions, as these big buyouts always do. [...]

Standards-based Video Chat Coming to Firefox

We’ve talked about WebRTC before, but now it seems Mozilla is well on its way to incorporating it into Firefox as their demo video shows. The video chat page that is served when the user initiates a video chat uses a custom API intended to simulate the getUserMedia and PeerConnection APIs currently being standardized at [...]

Cloudflare

I and every other Dreamhosts customer received an email last night informing us that they had formed a partnership with a web security service called Cloudflare.  We would be able to either pick their free option or pay $10 for something more advanced. Cloudflare is a security & caching service that should make this site [...]

Communications Capabilities Development Programme (CCDP)

In the coming weeks you may start hearing about the Communications Capabilities Development Programme (CCDP). This is an old plan from the Government which was initially shelves and then – supposedly – resurrected. The idea was initially suggested by Labour but the plan was put on hold when the Coalition took control of the House [...]

Getting WordPress to Display Shared Links Correctly

I’ve had this site running for a couple of years now, but something has been annoying me. Whenever I share a post from this site with one of the social networks (Facebook, Google+…) the URL shows up, a thumnail image (usually the wrong one, mind) and the tagline for the site, not the post.

WordPress SEO – A WordPress Plugin

I’m not sure what I did wrong with the Wordpress SEO plugin, but it decided it was going to use a related post’s title as a page title, so my post on Ubuntu 12.04 was given the header “Ubuntu 11.04 and Gnome 3″. Other posts were affected too.

Ruin – A Short by Wes Ball

Check out this post-apocalyptic vision crafted by Wes Ball. It reminds me of game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West in the way it portrays a ruined city in an overgrown and tech-filled way. I’m not sure if that was his intention, but the result is a vivid scene blessed by impressive production values.

Facebook Timeline for Pages

Finally! Facebook’s new Timeline has made it onto business and brand pages. I’m a big fan of the new Timeline and I’ve been eager to get it onto the Techbeast page as well. The timeline allows you to apply a great big image across the top of the page, which appeals to the show off [...]

The New & Improved 500px

I think it is fair to say that since 500px started to gather momentum among photographers it has been steaming along quite happily, eating up former Flickr users and generally basking in the warm glow of internet love. Like any online service it feels the need to keep moving, keep evolving and after the partnership [...]

More on Roaming Fees

I’ve talked at length before about roaming charges before, but having recently been away I’ve had chance to see things from the perspective of a user. First of all, when I last talked about data roaming charges, I said that: There’s a good article here on ZDnet that explains how Orange justifies it. To start [...]

A new version of WPTouch Pro has been released, which fixes a number of bugs, adds iPad ad support and more. Unfortunately, if you’ve arrived here using a mobile device you may have noticed a bit of an issue with embedded video in some of my other posts. I use Jetpack short codes to embed [...]
