Retro IT and the rise of IE6

I heard some deeply distressing news tonight. A tweet popped up from Ars Technica suggesting that Internet Explorer 6 was growing in market share once again. You can read the distressing report here. It also suggested that Windows XP was also on the rise.

O2 & Mobile Browsing

O2 customers had a bit of a fright this morning when news of a little flaw in the way the carrier was allowing websites to identify you over 3G started spreading across the internet. When you use the internet with any device, whether it is a phone, tablet, PC, Mac or even a PS3 the [...]

Dreamhost Domain Registrations & 500px

If you are a 500px “Awesome” customer and wish to make use of their custom domain feature, they helpfully provide instructions for how to map your domain to your 500px account using Godaddy as your domain registrar.  Unfortunately for me I’m already a Dreamhost customer and wanted to keep everything under one roof for convenience. [...]

Making a Portfolio Website

Here’s a rather lengthy lesson from podcast legend Ted Forbes (@tedforbes). In this episode he talks about the many options for creating your portfolio website, the things you should try to do and the things you should avoid. I must admit I agree with most of what he said, especially when it comes to the use of Flash. As I talked about in a previous post, around 25% of my visitors here are coming from mobile devices, specifically Apple devices which do not have Flash.

SOPA Protest Day 18th January 2012

You may remember a post from a few weeks ago talking about SOPA and why it was bad. If you don’t, here it is. To protest against this legislative abomination a number of high profile websites will go offline tomorrow. Wikipedia is one such site, as is WordPress.org. In all there are around 7000 who [...]

The New iPad Theme

iPad users rejoice! You can now view Techbeast.net in a more app-like way, complete with pop-out windows and the types of control boxes you will already be familiar with. iPhone & other mobile users will also be treated to a slightly flashier mobile theme, allowing you to browse in relative comfort.

Running PC Pro on tablets

UK PC magazine PC Pro recently tried to do a days work using nothing but iPads, Galaxy Tab’s and all manner of other tablet devices. They came a little unstuck using the WordPress app for iOS and Android, but it sounds like it was reasonably successful… You can read all about it here. I do [...]

What is SOPA?

This tells you what you need to know. When it comes to matters of law and politics it is usually safe to watch the Americans from afar, quietly grumbling about how dangerously backward the Republicans are. Sadly, when it comes to matters of the internet we need to sit up and take notice. The sites [...]

Are We Impatient or Do We Just Have An Attention Problem?

Whilst the desire to invoke “Betteridge’s Law” here is ever present, Chris does make some interesting points. As a society which increasingly relies on and revolves around the internet we have grown accustomed to having everything on a plate, instantly. The world is only a few clicks away and it is a world where people [...]

What Facebook Knows About You

This video should provide some food for thought. Sharing information online is one thing, I mean, you would assume that once it has been shared the world moves on and things are quickly forgotten. Sadly this isn’t the case, simply because there is a lot of money to be made from what you say, do [...]

Google Real-time Analytics

If you have a website, there’s a pretty good chance that knowing how many people it is reaching is going to play on your mind at some point. Thankfully, Google has had its Analytics tool available for some time now and it has been an invaluable tool for working out what people are looking at and what sort of audiences you are reaching.

Google Currents

Google has unleashed its Flipboard rival on iOS and Android devices, but currently only in the US (why??? It is not as if you are sending hard copies). The same could be said for Yahoo!’s alternative, Livestand.

Parallels 7 – Installing PC-BSD As A Guest

I’ve been a fan of Linux and general open-sorcery for some time now, but one thing that grinds my gears with Linux is licensing issues and the GPL. Grand Central dispatch, ZFS etc are great technologies that are unavailable to Linux because they are on different licenses that are “incompatible” with the GPL.

Windows Phone 7 Demo

If you go along to this site using your iPhone or Android browser, you’ll find an interactive demo of Microsoft’s flailing WP7 mobile operating system. It shares the Metro interface with Windows 8, so it’s a bit of a jarring experience if you are used to a more conventional system. There seems to be no [...]

WordPress Users Wales Meetup

Today was the first meeting of a WordPress user group just for us Wales folk. It was held at the new(ish) Atrium building down on Adam street in Cardiff. This is the University of Glamorgan’s creative hub, so it seemed a fitting venue for a WordPress meetup. Turnout was pretty good and whilst I didn’t [...]

Why Everyone Hates the IT Department

There’s a great article on PC Pro here talking about the many reasons why IT departments and the people they support don’t often see eye to eye. It’s when the two are forced to come together, however, that the classic worker vs IT relationship begins to unravel. The service desk is where the first seeds [...]

Google’s Spring (well, winter) Clean

Google is one of those companies that seems to spread itself very thinly. Rather than do a few things well, it seems to prefer to do a lot of things in a really half-assed way. It has dozens of projects and acquisitions that may have had potential, but due to a slight lack of focus [...]

Google App Updated for the iPad

If you have the Google app on your iPad but have left it to gather dust, you may want to take another look at it. It has recently had a bit of a makeover to take advantage of the larger screen, not to mention the gesture support. Launching the app takes you straight to a [...]
