If you don’t want an open source operating system but are wary of the petty squabbling over in the Linux camp, PC-BSD is a very good alternative.

I’ve been keeping a reasonably close eye on it for a couple of years now and it is maturing nicely. My only reservation is that it uses KDE, which is really pretty, but I find it hard to warm to it and always gravitate towards Gnome-based interfaces instead.
