The New 500px iPad App

If you don’t know what 500px is, you’d best check out my overview here.  In short, it’s a relatively new photo sharing site with an emphasis on quality and building a portfolio to be proud of.  As a result the calibre of the images you will find on there are in a different league to those you’ll find on Flickr, at least most of the time anyway.

Anyway, to help iPad users get the best out of 500px there is now a dedicated iPad app.  It’s a free app with a clean, simple interface and is really quite beautiful.  It makes browsing the cream of the 500px crop a breeze and is equally excellent for showing off your own efforts.

Images are initially displayed in a grid of square thumbnails which open out into full-screen images with a single press.  Tapping on an image will reveal a few controls for that image, including voting & fave buttons, sharing to facebook, twitter etc as well as the title and artist name.  To the left of the grid you’ll find a discrete set of buttons that take you from one section to another – popular, editors choice, up & coming, fresh, you, friends, favourites, settings and a slideshow button.  You can also swipe left and right to reveal more images.

Animations and transitions are at a standard you would expect for an iPad app from a website full of beautiful images – beautiful in other words.  I’m really struggling to find fault with it.  If you have an iPad, you really should have this app.  You don’t even need a 500px account as you can see all of the popular and highly rated images whether you are logged in or not.  If you have an account and you’ve set your profile to “display NSFW”, you’ll see lots of boobies in the app, but the option is there in the settings to filter them.
