Browser Benchmarks

As I’ve alluded to in the past, I’m a bit of a browser tart – I’m forever flitting from one to the next when I start to get annoyed with a feature – or a lack of a feature within the current one. Lately I’ve been alternating between Safari and Chrome. My previous love affair with Chrome ended when it stopped displaying images in Flickr and the lack of bookmark sync through MobileMe started wearing thin too. Safari ticks most of the boxes but it does feel a little sluggish. Firefox 4 is still in beta, but it’s coming on quite nicely and whilst I’ve never spent much time with Opera, now seems as good a time as any to see what it can do.
Thunderbolt
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Mac OSX, News on February 25, 2011
Thunderbolt has arrived and looks set to sweep its way across the computing landscape over the next few months. It stomps over USB3 and Firewire 800 in terms of data throughput and is available now on the recently updated range of Apple Macbook Pro’s. So, what is it?
Reeder for Mac (beta)
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Mac OSX on February 22, 2011
If you like Reeder on the iPhone (I’m told the iPad version is a “dogs dinner”), you may be interested to know that a version for Mac OSX is out in Beta form. Whilst the screenshot above is a bit squished, it’s a stunning looking application. It also retains the iOS version’s killer feature – Readability.

Google Reader is an invaluable resource and a great way to access news and reviews from your favourite websites using their RSS feed. It is no surprise that there is no shortage of apps that plug into your Google Reader account. The trouble is, some are better than others.
Instapaper

I’m ashamed to say I’m a little late to the party here. Instapaper has been around for a while now and I’ve only just started using it. Instapaper is a bookmarking tool that allows you to save articles from websites to an account on Instapaper.com and access them from the iPhone app or the website. From the website you can download the articles to Kindle and ePub for reading on e-ink.
Motorola Atrix & other Androidy thoughts
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Linux, UNIX & Open Source on February 20, 2011
I’m not planning to ditch my iPhone anytime soon – I can’t really, there’s another year to run on my contract. However, whilst watching BBC Click today this Motorola Atrix caught my eye.
CADW – iOS
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Places, Utilities, Wales on February 20, 2011
It is nice to see a few Welsh apps appear on the app store. What with the rugby apps and a few tourism ones, it’s not a bad showing. Now CADW, the body responsible for maintaining all of those castles we are famous for has an app too.

The Darkness 2
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Games, News, PC Games, Playstation 3 on February 18, 2011
In news that made me giddy with excitement, 2K Games announced that a sequel to the grossly under-rated FPS “The Darkness” was on the way. I loved the first game and I’m really pleased that they are making another one. The website suggests it’ll be with us in the Autumn.
RBS 6 Nations – iOS
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, Utilities on February 18, 2011
There are quite a few rugby team apps out there now and as a large tournament rolls around, you can bet there will be an app for that too.
Mainstream Linux
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Linux, UNIX & Open Source on February 17, 2011
Not a year goes by where someone asks “Will [insert year] be the year of the Linux desktop”. Every year the answer seems to be no. There are always going to be barriers to widespread user adoption of linux, whether they be dirty tricks from Microsoft and Apple, the lack of a significant retail presence or even the lack of high-end productivity applications such as Photoshop, it isn’t going to be an easy ride.
43/365 – Through the blinds
Posted by Gavin Lewis in Odds & Ends, Photography, Project 365, Thoughts on February 17, 2011
Apologies for the lack of activity on Techbeast lately. As you can imagine the “cuts” are starting to bite and that is having an impact on my place of work. I won’t say too much about it but it looks like I’ll be staying put for a while longer.
The Referendum

I created this image as part of my 365, but I’m not going to waste the opportunity to have my say.

Nokia are in a bit of a mess these days. They had things pretty much their own way a few years ago when Symbian ruled the roost and their N-series smartphones were competing with Microsoft’s disappointing mobile offering. These days it is all about iOS and Android, with RIM and their Blackberry holding their own in the enterprise market.
iBooks 1.2.1
Posted by Gavin Lewis in iOS, News, Utilities on February 9, 2011
Apple has rolled out another update for iBooks. The new version features stability & performance improvements, AirPrint functionality (if you have a printer that works with it) and the ability to organise your books & PDFs into collections (I could have sworn that was in the last update?!).
40/365 – a day in my shoes…

Another happy accident. Didn’t take anything all day, but got home, kicked off my trainers and they fell like this.

34/365 – The Senedd at night Was quite pleased with this one, although I was chilled to the bone waiting for the exposure to finish. We were experiencing gales in South Wales last night, but Cardiff Bay is windy at the best of times. Jamie’s Recipies – iOS Jamie Oliver may not be everyone’s favourite [...]
