Oracle

Oh dear oh dear oh dear, what have you done Oracle – and what are you going to do next?

Since aquiring Sun Microsystems for $7.4bn in April 2009, they’ve quickly become the scourge of the open source community. First of all, they fired up their team of lawyers to go after Google over an alleged copyright and patent infringement of its Java technology.

Harley & photographing kittens

It’s been a quiet week at Techbeast towers, mainly because I’ve been having some time off work with my wife and we’ve just welcomed our newest member of the family – Harley.

Internet Explorer 6 – The Case Against

The UK public sector are still using Internet Explorer 6 and the rest of the internet isn’t happy.

Released in 2001, shortly after the launch of Windows XP, IE6 played no small part in building XP’s reputation for being a complete and utter sieve and a security liability.

The Road

Directed by John Hillcoat, The Road is an incredibly bleak tale of a man and his son fighting to survive a world where civilisation as we know it has ended. The newest iteration of the iPhone OS arrived with a bit of a whimper around here. I don’t know whether it was a timezone thing or an error in judgement but the big new features in iOS 4.1 were either absent or unusable.

Selling Prints

My dear wife can be very useful sometimes. She’s been talking to local businesses whilst brandishing a collection of my photos. Turns out they like them very much and one of them is interested in selling my prints. I won’t say too much about it now for fear of hexing the whole thing, but needless to say I’m quite excited by this.

HDR photos in iOS4.1

Oooooo! Things just got interesting. Coming next week iOS4.1 will bring bug fixes and performance improvements for the iPhone 3G, Game centre finally makes an appearance…plus…in camera HDR…on your iPhone! (or the new ipod touch) According to Jobs it takes three exposures in quick succession – one over exposed, one under and one in the middle – as you would on a normal camera. It then puts them all together for you, whilst retaining the three originals in case you want to keep them.

iTunes 10

Apple recently held a media event to launch some new ipods, a new Apple TV and iTunes 10. Whilst the first two seem to have been largely welcomed, the new iTunes has created some debate. For starters, they’ve changed the UI so that now the minimise, maximise and close buttons are aligned vertically and the icons for music, movies, apps etc are devoid of colour.
