Seeing the World – well, Europe for now…

Bruges train station, originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis.

My wife and I are planning a trip. When we were both at that age where the typical “student” decides to go off and do some travelling, we were busy working and never really had the chance.

We plan to head to France, maybe with one nights accommodation booked. We’ll then head east with the aim of seeing some of Germany and Poland. It’s a shame Russia and Ukraine are still quite difficult to get into because I’d really like to go there too. They both require Visa’s and require a letter of invitation from the travel agent.

Has anyone done that? Just jumped on a train with no fixed plan? Any tips?

Of course, I plan to take a lot of photographs and I’ll be taking the tripod this time. I’ve always been worried about taking the tripod on a plane so going by train removes that worry.

We’d like to go to Canada at some point in the future and ride the rails across from Toronto to the west coast, but that’s going to need some significant amounts of money.
