Seeing the World – well, Europe for now…

Bruges train station, originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis. My wife and I are planning a trip. When we were both at that age where the typical “student” decides to go off and do some travelling, we were busy working and never really had the chance. We plan to head to France, maybe with one nights [...]

Longtime Exposure Calculator – iPhone

If you have jumped onto the 10-stop ND filter bandwagon, you may be having a bit of trouble calculating exposure times with a filter that lets so little light through. If you have an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad this app should help. Simply meter your scene with the filter off, select the filter you are using – anything from 2 stops to 12 and select the exposure time calculated by the camera. It’ll then display the exposure time with the filter. Punch the numbers in with the camera in manual mode and shoot…and wait…patiently…

Hoya +4 Closeup Filter

If you’ve ever wanted to try Macro photography, you have a number of options. The most obvious option is to buy a dedicated Macro lens, but they can be expensive and there is no telling how much use you will get out of it. The other option is to buy a 50mm f1.8 prime lens for a reasonable £104 and mount it backwards. The problem with that is that you lose metering and autofocus, so it isn’t ideal.

Photoshop Express for iPhone

Adobe recently re-branded their Photoshop.com app to a fully-fledged Adobe branded app and apart from a new splash screen it is pretty much the same as before. It is nice to see you can now lock the crop tool to a set ratio, making square crops easier.

Sky Sports News iPhone app

Well I had no idea this was available but stumbled upon it just now. There has been a few TV & news apps enter the app store and this continues the trend. Just like the BBC news and Sky news apps this allows you to stream live TV, as well as providing up to date [...]

The Important things

It’s time to sit down and take stock of the fallout from getting the photo in my previous post into Flickr’s “Explore”.

Projects

I need to start one of these – I need a direction, something to inspire me and something to collect all of my photo’s into something meaningful. You’ll notice from my Flickr stream I tend to jump from one thing to another, but maybe I need to focus on something so that people can follow what I’m doing.

Bowls

Bowls, originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis. Found this lurking on the hard drive. This is from St Fagans when my wife and I went there a few months ago. One of the exhibitions is a block of terraced houses with each one decorated according to a different decade. It is quite an eye-opener, seeing how [...]

Feminists vs Hooters

Iron ladies are probably quite topical around here at the moment, in light of the news that Hooters, the US restaurant chain famous for its large-chested waitresses is hoping to open a restaurant in Cardiff. It has stirred the local feminists into quite a frenzy, crying foul of a business that “objectifies women”…

Charity bags

We’re getting a considerable number of charity collection sacks at the moment. They’re coming from all sorts of charities and only one that I’ve ever heard of. One of them even has a googlemail account as a contact email.

I’m all for supporting a charity. My wife and I do what we can for the Multiple Sclerosis Trust, but I’m getting increasingly agitated by all of this unsolicited begging.

Coffee

I wanted to set up some shots around the house of people doing things. Unfortunately my wife is at work and there is nobody else around so I had to be in them. I decided to create a shot of me making a coffee – the main aim is to get a photo to upload to Britstock, the side effect is that I get a nice hot mug of coffee to drink.

What would Garfield do?

Well, this was a bit of a surprise. It was almost a throwaway shot taken while the wife and I were enjoying some alfresco dining. The cat had jumped into my wife’s seat and started staring at her leftovers.

Seems to be more popular than some of the shots I’ve put effort into. That’s the nature of the beast it seems.

An evening on the Pont-y-werin – The obligatory B&W Square crop

Oh alright, one more! You know I like the black & white square crops and this shot was asking for it.

Zorki 4 Test roll!

As you’ll no doubt be aware by now, I’ve been borrowing a Zorki 4 to try out. I bought a roll of Kodak ColourPlus 200 ISO colour film and took some shots in the garden. I have no light meter so I had to rely on Sunny 16 to measure the exposures, but this is how they turned out. Out of 24 shots 14 came out and some of them aren’t worth showing. Here’s what is left.

Pont-y-werin Bridge

Pont-y-werin bridge is a new footbridge (and cycle way) linking Penarth and Cardiff. Previously the only way to walk to and from Penarth to Cardiff was over the barrage (providing it wasn’t closed for the night) or down Penarth road, which is not ideal. Until the bridge opened walkers and cyclists would dice with death on the Cogan Spur, a busy stretch of tarmac with no hard shoulder or pavement.

Zorki 4

As I mentioned in a previous blog post, a friend from work has let me borrow his Zorki 4. Well, I brought it home today – passing Cameraland in the Royal Arcade to get some 35mm film.

This thing is awesome – it is like a block of steel with a lens attached, completely manual, no electronics at all and quite clearly built to survive a brutal Russian winter.
