Do you have a style?

I must confess, I’ve become a bit of a Chase Jarvis fan. He’s a professional photographer and director, which in itself is nothing unusual, but he’s quite a prolific Youtuber as well. Anyway, I came across this video of him and Zach Arias having a frank discussion about photography (for two whole hours I may add) and about 8 minutes in they raise an interesting question – when did you realise you had a style?

Zorki-4K

Zorki-4K, originally uploaded by Novacane. I’m excited! A friend from work has a Zorki 4 that has been sat unused in his house for a few years. He knew he had it but it went missing for a while and he couldn’t find it. I’ve just been told that he’s found it and he’s letting [...]

Aperture 3 Presets

I’ve been spending a bit of time trying to find out what plugins are available for Aperture 3 and which ones are worth getting. As it turns out, I may have been missing out on half of the fun. One of the things that the 3rd incarnation of Aperture brought with it was the ability to create and share presets between users.

31 Photos That’ll Leave You Wanting to Shoot With a 50mm Lens | The Inspiration Blog

http://www.theinspirationblog.net/showcases/31-reasons-that-will-make-you-wan… Inspiring post about my favourite lens here. The 50mm prime is wonderful and whilst this post is image-heavy, it does provide some very good examples of what this bargain lens is capable of. £104 I paid for the Nikkor 50mm F1.8 AF-D and it was the best piece of photographic equipment I have ever [...]

Workflow

Inspired by a Britstock colleague, I thought I’d spend some time talking about workflow. My workflow is something that has taken quite a while to develop and I have experimented with a fair amount of different software options along the way while I avoided the issue of spending money.

More praise for Time Machine and a cautionary tale

his will be my 2nd post waxing lyrical about Time Machine, but I don’t care, I feel it needs to be done.
I had a day out with my wife to St Fagans Welsh Folk Museum a few weeks ago. While I was there I took a few dozen photo’s and a good number of them came out great (in my opinion…). However, this was around the time where I was trialling Aperture so I had the obligatory “Trial Aperture Library” on the go and these pictures ended up there.

Sailor Soup

We have a Welsh folk museum here in Cardiff called St Fagans. Over the years historians have been relocating historic and culturally significant buildings to the site brick by brick, as well as their associated fixtures and fittings. It’s quite an interesting place if you are ever visiting Cardiff and entry is currently free, although parking is around £3.

Tethered shooting with the iPad

An enterprising photographer has managed to tether his Canon 5D Mk2 to his iPad…

Iced Coffee

It’s funny how you can latch onto some places and find yourself spending a disturbing amount of time there. My wife an I go to a local branch of Costa very regularly. Nothing unusual in that you may think, but this particular branch is in the middle of a car park on the outskirts of town. Still, it’s good coffee…

Ferris Wheel

Apologies all, but I’ve been neglecting the photo side of Techbeast.net this week. You see, as I’ve mentioned before I’ve been working with Britstock Photo Ltd to try and bring some much needed UK focus to the stock photography business and have been putting some blog posts up at http://britstockphoto.posterous.com

Repairing Permissions in OSX

For a while I’ve been experiencing a frequent and annoying pause whilst doing routine tasks on my MacBook Pro. It usually happens within the web browser (all of them) or even in OpenOffice, but it is particularly noticeable in Aperture (mainly because it is sluggish at the best of times).

Early mornings

I managed to get up in time to share my wife’s taxi to the train station. She needed to get the early train to London for a meeting and the buses are useless at that time, so taxi was the only way. Armed with just my phone I made my way across town and up [...]

Linux for Professional Photographers

As you know, I like Linux. I also like photography but Linux is often left out in the cold by the pro photographers because their beloved Adobe products are not available. I don’t particularly like Adobe and will not pay their obscene prices so this is a useful tip for me too.

Aperture 3 – a grumble

I was very pleased to welcome Aperture 3 into my photo-fiddling arsenal. It’s an excellent piece of software and well worth the £180 Apple ask for it, but one thing that is starting to grate on me is the performance. It will be fine some days then for no apparent reason at other times it’ll [...]

A hankering for a bit of history

I took a walk into town at lunchtime and dropped by the Cardiff Digital Camera Centre. Despite the name, the things that interest me most about the place are the old 35mm and medium format camera’s they have in the window. They have loads, certainly a few shelves worth. Everything from Nikon & Canon to Rollei and Zorki. I’m in love with the nifty fifty, but I’m not able to pay £1700 for the ability to use it as a 50mm rather than a 75mm. I’m probably looking back at film through rose tinted glasses, but I think it is something I need to get out of my system.

The End of the Mac?

here was an article on the Guardian website here that suggested that (just) because Apple hadn’t announced anything new for the Mac at WWDC (whilst it wasn’t mentioned specifically, it is where all this talk has come from), they were losing interest in the mac and that its days may be numbered. The article makes some observations about how everything is heading into the mobile realm and the desktop PC was becoming less and less relevant, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Camera+ (iPhone)

I have been playing with TapTapTap & MostlyLisa’s Camera+ app on the iPhone. So far so very good, and it does everything that Photoshop.com’s app does and more

Wreck

f you are a regular reader, or know me out in the real world you’ll know that I have just moved house and have lately been going through the process of trying to find homes for things in the new place. This is usually the time when you discover things you’ve had sat in a box for months, if not years and not looked at them for a while.
