Photography podcasts

I’ve become a fan of photo-related podcasts lately. I find them to be a valuable source of information and insight into the minds of people who have been doing this a lot longer than I have.
Some are obviously better than others, but two that I would seriously recommend are:

Rick Sammon’s 24-7 Photo Buffet

Here’s a tip for you iPhone carrying photographers out there. Rick Sammon, prolific photographer, published author and all-round helpful chap has released an iPhone app called Rick Sammon’s 24-7 Photo Buffet

It is a hefty 100+MB download from iTunes, so you’ll need to be on a wifi connection to download it and it costs £2.99 which is reasonably steep for an iphone app. However, it is full of useful tips, sample photo’s and tutorial video to help you become a better photographer.

Barbed Wire

As a change from my previous efforts this week, I’ve decided to leave the colour on this one as it seemed to add interest to the shot. The shades of green were too nice to pass up on this occasion. The 50mm usually renders the “out of focus” with harsh circular discs, especially when facing into the sunlight, so I think I got lucky this time.
I’ve also cropped the original shot quite severely – as much as I can without ending up with a blocky mess.

Just Cause 2 (PC)

I have a bit of a thing for benchmarks and I was a big fan of Just Cause 1 on the 360 and PC. Just Cause 2 arrives on the 26th March 2010 and it is shaping up to be just like the first one but with more of everything and a much improved graphics engine, including CUDA-accelerated water, depth of field and other cool features.

Strollers

I know I’ve probably said I don’t really care about Flickr’s Explore, but for the first time ever one of my shots made it in at #299. The main reason being a lot of people favourited it relative to how many actually viewed it. Plus it was linked to from various places and not posted in too many groups.

Selling stock

If you look at any of the images they use in newspapers or on the BBC news website, you rarely see sweeping land or seascapes, you see signposts, household objects, furniture, cropped shots of vehicles, planes, taxi’s and staged shots of someone doing something – like handing a baton to someone or holding a briefcase. It is the sort of shot that would be largely ignored on a site like Flickr, but useful for someone looking for an image to brighten an otherwise dull publication.

Facebook Page

I’ve launched a Facebook page for myself. I do wonder whether this was a good idea or not, but if it helps to broaden my audience it can’t hurt can it??

In any case, I’d like to thank the people who have already clicked on that “Become a fan” button.

The Mac, a gaming scene in the making?

Valve, the much championed game developer and creator of the Steam delivery service for Windows PC’s recently announced that it was bringing the Steam client to OSX. Steam is the one right answer to combating piracy on the PC and most publishers worth the time of day use it. Steam allows you to buy and download games from their online store, right onto your hard drive, whilst protecting the developer with its inbuilt DRM yet allowing the consumer to re-download the game at any time. Not only that it also patches your purchased games automatically and provides community features such as instant messaging, a server browser, community groups and personal profiles for each user. It has recently added more features, such as the ability to store your save games in the cloud, achievements and Steamworks – its development and publishing suite.
