Randy Cat Pate – con Selvaggina Originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis Now, is this cat food or pate? It says pate but it has a cat on it…? Maybe it is pate made from cat?!

The Cuddly Chicken Originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis My friend and colleague has a collection of overseas goodies that he brings out every year to amuse people. He’s a hell of a character and true to form, his display was out again this year.

It’s always exciting when it starts snowing. It breaks up the routine a little and gets people talking about whether it will settle. While you are in work the main topic of conversation is that all important “will I be able to get home?!”
Black & White
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography on December 30, 2009
I seem to have developed a bit of a thing for turning my photo’s into black and white. It must be a symptom of this winter we are having – colour is in short supply, and most of the city I work in drab and grey.
Ubuntu 9.10

When 9.10 first arrived I grabbed the ISO in the usual manner – via bit-torrent – my connection was slow and I couldn’t be trusted to keep my browser open long enough. However the ISO was in some way faulty and refused to boot properly. Frustrated I left it alone and kept playing whatever game I had on the go at the time.
Time passed and I had an urge to give it another go – there’s nothing quite like a linux distro to remind you of how fast and fluid your PC can be. So, this time I downloaded it from the Ubuntu site and low and behold – this one worked a treat.

Luke..Luke..use the forks.. Originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis Well, I had bought my super-sharp 50mm prime, so I thought I’d try a bit of “still life” with this fork. I liked the shadow the prongs cast beneath, but that’s about it. Quite boring really. Does anyone have any tips?

Bench Originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis Flickr, like any community-driven website, goes through phases – or fads – there are certain types of images that are incredibly popular for a time, or even stay popular – kittens, any type of bokeh, HDR, sunsets – preferably those taken from a rockpool on a beach. Explore may [...]

Great Tit Originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis I’m also chuffed with this shot. No editing required, this is as it came out of the camera.

Blue tit (Cyanistes Caeruleus) Originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis I’m so pleased with this shot. No editing required, this is as it came out of the camera, save for a 4×6 portrait crop. A £100 telephoto lens and 5 minutes of peace where there were no families walking around scaring the birds away. It helped [...]
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Complete Mod 2009
Posted by gavomatic57 in Games, PC Games on December 25, 2009
A complete legend by the name of Pavel Dolgov put together a complete overhaul of the initially buggy and wildly misunderstood title S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. The mod fixes the often strange translation in the dialogues, adds graphical effects in keeping with the newer S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky without hurting performance too badly.
Creative use of a shallow depth of field
Posted by gavomatic57 in Photography on December 25, 2009
Through glass Originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis It’s worth remembering that a shallow depth of field is not just for throwing the background out of focus, it can also be used to frame something in the distance, such as this window and the tree outside. The Nikkor 50mm f1.8 prime has such a shallow depth [...]

Apple Ipod Classic – 50mm f1.8 Depth of Field test Originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis The 50mm prime – or nifty fifty as it is affectionately known – is a sharp lens and the Nikkor 50mm AF-D f1.8 is no exception. For the princely sum of £104 you too can have a simple, sharp and [...]

I gave a lesson in long exposures to a someone who is even more of a noob than I am. It was of mutual benefit to be honest – they learned how to do long exposures and I had someone force me to fight my fear of shooting in busy public places. I’m still not quite over my psychological barrier, but I’ve made a start and got a some light trails out of it in the process.
Nuthatch

Nuthatch Originally uploaded by Gavin Lewis Finally, I’ve got a photo of a nuthatch that doesn’t suck! I’ve been trying for a couple of years now and I only ever find them in dark, dank corners of the woods where my measly f5.6 300mm lens struggles to hit them at a low ISO. Pleased with [...]
